General information

The Marinelli Bivouac (Italian: Capanna Damiano Marinelli) (3,036 m) is a mountain bivouac hut above Macugnaga in the Pennine Alps in Italy. It's situated on the Crestone Marinelli on the n side of the well-known Marinelli Couloir (Canalone Marinelli). Stone built with a wooden floor and cut into the rocks behind. Rather superior to most bivouac huts. It has been made very conspicious having been paint with diagonal red and white stripes.

Approach Route

Take the chairlift to Belveder (1,904 m). A 5-10 min walk leads to the edge of the Belvedere Glacier. Descend moraine on to the rubble covered glacier and cross it S to the R lateral moraine (waymarked with paint flashes). Follow the crest for a little way towards the Zamboni and Zappa Hut but at the fork in the track about 20 min from Belvedere (signpost) turn R on to the glacier. Cross it (paint flashes) to the L bank and follow this S to pass below the Nordend Glacier before reaching the moraine below the Crestone Marinelli on the N side via névé and scree before reaching its broad crest at a grassy saddle. A path now leads up grassy slopes and a few easy rock steps to the hut.
