[edit] General information

The Agassizjoch (3,749 m12,299.869 ft
2.33 miles
) is a high mountain pass in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. The pass connects the Walliser Fiescherfirn and the Finsteraar Glacier on the border of the canton of Berne and Valais. The pass lies between the Agassizhorn on the north and the Finsteraarhorn on the south. The pass was and important accesspoint to the Finsteraarhorn Hut from Grindelwald before the opening of the Jungfraubahn (train from Grindelwald through Eiger and Mönch to Jungfraujoch) and the road to Grimsel Pass.

For more information see Finsteraarhorn Hut.

[edit] History

The Agassizjoch was first crossed from NE to SW by James John Hornby, Thomas Henry Philpot and F. Morshead together with Christian Almer, Christian Lauener and Jakob Anderegg on 7 August 1866.

From Finsteraarhorn Hut follow the east side of the Walliser Fiescherfirn to the foot of a rockrib at P. 3105 and climb in NE direction up a crevassed firnhang, coming down the Agassizhorn. In the mid third section move from from east to west for risk of ice fall.

From Finsteraarjoch (3,286m) cross horizontally south on the foot of the 45° ice couloir that provides access to the Agassizjoch. One climbs at the start in the middle of the couloir and crosses the Bergschrund, from here one climbs on 'firn'. At ca 3,500m go right on the rock ridge that brings you to the Agassizhorn flank. Over the brittle rock ridge till ca 100 m under the saddle. From here traverse left(S) the icy firn couloir untill 3,600 m rigde. Here up to the main ridge, then a few steps left to the pass. In good snow conditions in spring the couloir can be climbed direct.
