[edit] General information

The Allalinpass (3,564 m11,692.913 ft
2.215 miles
) is a pass in the Pennine Alps of Switzerland. This pass was first crossed in 1828 by E.-H. Michaelis with several other guides.

The Allalinpass is a broad snow saddle in the Mischabel massif between the Rimpfischhorn and the Allalinhorn connecting the Mellich Glacier with the Allalin Glacier. It provides an easy passage between Täsch and Saas Fee or the Täsch Hut and the Britannia Hut. The pass can also be reached via Mittelallalin by crossing the Feejoch.

This pass is often climbed as a starting point of an ascent of the Allalinhorn (SW Ridge), several ascent routes of the Rimpfischhorn or even an ascent of the Adlerhorn or Strahlhorn. Novice climbers can climb this pass as goal on itself on a route from the Täsch Hut to the Britannia Hut for example. Always be aware of the danger of glaciers though which are always present.

#1: Route from the Täsch Hut to the Allalinpass

From the Täsch Hut follow the gradually rising path into the Chummiboden combe and then climb up the combe keeping the stream on your right side to reach the Alphubel Glacier. Climb the glacier heading SE and, ignoring tracks leading off left to the Alphubeljoch, reach the rounded glacier rib descending ENE to Pt.3,421m. Contour round at an altitude of 3,500m on to some stony ground then descend diagonally, losing as little height as possible, on to the N side of the Mellich Glacier. Now climb easy snow slopes SE to reach the pass. You can see the routes on photo #1 and #2.

An alternative route follows the track to the Alphubeljoch. Just below the Alphubeljoch, head ESE in the direction of the Feechopf summit. Pass this summit and descend on rocky terrain towards the Feejoch. Follow the route from Feejoch as described below. This route becomes PD because of some climbing (II) in the Feechopf descent.

#2: Overview of the routes leading to the Allalinpass

From the Britannia Hut, head S and cross the Hohlaub Glacier. Aim to the saddle between the Allalinhorn and a rock hump. From the saddle the path descends a bit to reach the glacier again but stays close to the Allalinhorn wall. Continue on the glacier to the direction of Adlerpass until the glacier plateau wall turns W. Now, heading WSW, take as direct a line as possible to the pass. You can see the routes on photo #2.

Starting in Saas Fee, you can reach Mittelallalin via a series of lifts and railways. From Mittelallalin, cross the pistes heading SW of the prominent spur on the initially steep glacier and then head up to Feejoch (3,826 m12,552.493 ft
2.377 miles
). Do NOT take a direct line because you will cross a severely crevassed section of the glacier. Be sure to curb around this crevassed area by heading SW instead of heading S. It takes only 1h to reach Feejoch.

A little to the W of the lowest point, descent loose rocks and then steep snow (bergschrund) on to the Mellich Glacier. Cross this heading SSW then S to the pass. You can see the routes on photo #2.
