The Arben Bivouac (German: Arben Biwak) (3,224 m10,577.428 ft
2.003 miles
) is a superior bivouac hut with all the DIY cooking requirements, located in the Pennine Alps, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It's situated on a rock island in the middle of the Arben Glacier below the S face of the Ober Gabelhorn. The hut is not guarded but is always open (see warden in advance). The Arben Bivouac was a gift from the KNAV (Royal Dutch Alps Organisation) to the Zermatt SAC Section. It was given in July 1977 for the 75 year jubilee of the KNAV.

15 places.

The kitchen has gas and utensils, but no food nor drinks are available. There is undrinkable mountain water and light is provided with solar panels.

Approach route
  • From Zermatt: Zmutt - Staffelalp (the path above Kalbermatten is sometimes blocked by rockfall) - Arben waterfalls - Arbengandegge - Arben Glacier - bivouac (5-6h)
  • From Zermatt: with the gondola to Schwarzsee - descent to the Staffelalp restaurant - Arben waterfalls - Arbengandegge - Arben Glacier - bivouac (4-5h)

The last 150m to the hut are VERY steep, equipped with ladders and cables
