[edit] General information
The Balmenhorn Bivouac (Italian: Bivacco Felice Giordano) (4,167 m) is a mountain bivouac hut above Gressoney-la-Trinité and Alagna Valsésia in the Pennine Alps in Valle d'Aosta, Italy. It's a small wood-built hut situated on the Balmenhorn, a rognon on the E side of the Lis Glacier. A large (3.6 m) statue of Christ (Christo delle Vette) stands on the rocks above the hut. It is made out of bronze and was created by Alfredo Bai in 1955.
[edit] History
During WW1 a first hut was built on the Balmenhorn. In 1955 the Christ statue was built and in 1985 the current hut replaced the old one. The hut was dedicated to Felice Giordano (a guide from Alagna Valsesia) who lost his life during an alpine rescue mission.

[edit] Approach Route
- From Punta Indren via Città di Mantova Hut and Gnifetti Hut, on the way to the Lisjoch: (3,5h)
- From Gnifetti Hut: (1,5h)
Climb the rocks above the hut to get on to the Lis Glacier. Climb the glacier up gently inclined slopes towards the NE and then N to pass the W flank of Piramide Vincent. Somewhat steeper, crevassed slopes are now climbed whilst still heading N. The angle eases considerably as you pass the rock outcrop of the Balmenhorn (4,167 m) on your R. On the rocks there is a statue of Christ which is visible from the trail. The hut is not visible. Straight ahead is the W col of the Lisjoch. Climb the rock (II) to the hut from the R.
