[edit] Approach routes
From Gasenried (parking at the entrance to the hamlet) walk along the road until a little way past a chapel. A path branches off L (signpost to Grat) ant then contours the hillside parallel to a water channel (bise). Cross a bridge and then a little further on keep L at a fork before starting the steep climb through the forest to Alpja. There is a welcome water source towards the top of the steepest part of the path. An alternative route starts across the road from the car park and follows a path heading roughly SE. Cross four water channels before reaching Pt. 1,930 m below Grefzug. Beyond the block of forest take a path leading R and cross the old bed of the Ried Glacier before joining the path to Alpja described above. Beyond Alpja the path starts to climb guite steeply up the L lateral moraine of the Ried Glacier as far as Pt. 2,600 m. It then cuts up the flank of the hillside (cairns; snow patches) before making a short descent on to the glacier at 2,760 m. Cross the mainly dry glacier following marker poles, more or less at the same height and then rising to reach the R bank of the glacier at 2,820 m. Scramble up a few rocks and then follow the path easily to the hut. When warden is present, the glacier crossing is well indicated and easy (within reach of families with children).
- Variant: from Grächen or Gasenried via Mittelberg (Europaweg) to the Ried Glacier - glacier crossing
- Winter: ascent through Alpja - Ried Glacier
