[edit] General information

The Quintino Sella Hut (Italian: Rifugio (or Capanna) Quintino Sella (al Felik)) (3,585 m) is a mountain hut above Ayas and Gressoney in the Pennine Alps in Valle d'Aosta, Italy. It's situated on a short level spur on the W edge of the Felik Glacier and S of Castor and Punta Perazzi. This hut is relatively new and is built alongside the old one (which has 30 places for winter use). The hut wardens are Favre Adriano, Favre Alfredo and Pession Liliana (0039 (0)125 30 72 63 & 0039 (0)348 81 07 793).

[edit] History

First hut was built in 1885 and rebuilt in 1907 and 1924 after destruction by avalanche. The current 3 story hut was built in 1982 and was dedicated to Quintino Sella (Italian alpinist and founder of the CAI).

[edit] Approach routes

Take a taxi or walk to Alpe Pian di Verra Sup and then climb grassy slopes ESE to the small lake at 2,775 m (poorly marked track). Climb the comb on the E side of the lake to the ridge at its lowest point. This is the Sup Bettolina Pass (3,100 m). Follow the ridge Nwards, just on the E side. The route becomes quite exposed and there are chains for security before the crest is reached at 3,490 m. Follow the narrow crest, equipped with ropes, to the hut.

Drive or take a take bus to Staffal (or Staval) further up the valley and use the 2 stage lift to the Colle di Bettaforca. Follow the path Nwards on the E side of the ridge to join with the route from San Giacomo. (2,5-3h from Colle di Bettaforca) On foot from Staffal a more direct path leads via Alpe Bettlino to the Passo di Bettolina where the ridge mentioned above is joined. (Takes 2-3h extra)
