[edit] General information
The Rothorn Hut (German: Rothornhütte) (3,198 m10,492.126 ft
1.987 miles) is a mountain hut in the Pennine Alps in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It's situated near Zermatt, high above the Trift Glacier at the foot of a rock rib which separates the Trift and Rothorn glaciers. It is strategically located for climbing the popular 4000-meter peaks Zinalrothorn and Ober Gabelhorn. Before the building of the hut the hotel Trift situated almost 900 meter lower down was the starting point for mountain and glacier routes in the region. The hut is owned by the SAC and the warden is Hans Zurniwen (Tel: 0041 (0)27 967 16 20).

[edit] Approach route
From the center of Zermatt follow the path to Trift (signposted). Turn R just past Berghasthaus Trift and, after crossing a stream , climb more steeply for a few minutes to the point where a R fork leads towards the Mettelhorn. Keep L here and cross the fairly level ground of Vieliboden before rising again to reach, after crossing another stream, the foot of the E lateral moraine of the Trift Glacier. Enjoy, if you can, the climb up the moraine to reach the hut (4-5h).
