[edit] Approach routes

Italian side

  • From Breuil-Cervinia: take lift to Testa Grigia station and walk more or less Nwards down the pass utilising the Theodul Glacier and join a ski piste part way down. (0,5h from Testa Grigia)
  • From Breuil-Cervinia: the path begins just above the hotel Cime Bianche (the Albergo Monte Cervino indicated on the Swiss maps does not exist, at least not any more). The path is marked (sparsely) by yellow arrows painted on rocks and sometimes by its number, 15. The beginning is inconspicuous and the first 100 meters look deserted. Pass carefully a half-destroyed small bridge and continue up, toward the Plan Maison lift station. From there continue parallel to the ski lifts to the Theodule pass, which is visible all the way from Plan Maison. The bulldozers have destroyed most of the indications (always yellow arrows) and the path is now practically a wide dirt road. Almost the whole of the route follows the line of ski-installations. Keep below the last ski-tow and reach the small glacier on the W side of the pass, crossing some stony terrain in the process, and climb this to the pass. The hut, located a few meters lower and to the South, is not visible until you actually set foot on the pass. (4h)

Swiss side

  • From Zermatt, take the lift to Trockener Steg and take a path S to the Gandegg Hut. From here take a path SSW to the Theodul Glacier and cross it (crevasses) heading SW before following the line of a ski-tow or the adjacent piste. Finally reach the Theodulpass after skirting round the E side of the Theodulhorn(2h from Trockener Steg)
  • From Zermatt the Gandegg Hut can be reached in 3,5h by foot (paths to Furi, to Furgg and to the Gandegg Hut). Then 1,5h to the Theodulpass.
  • From Zermatt take the lift to Klein Matterhorn Station and walk to the pass from there. Walk down to the saddle at Pt. 3,796 m. Descend SW to a steepening of the glacier slope which can then be descended in the fall-line (crevasses) until the slope eases. Alternatively, where the slope steepens, follow a prepared piste which makes a long, sweeping curve to reach the foot of the slope. From here turn NW and continue the descent to the Testa Grigia alongside a ski-tow. Continue more or less N down the glacier to the pass. (1,5h)
