[edit] General information
[edit] Geographic location
The Wannenhorn Group is a massif located in the center of the Bernese Alps just south of the border between Valais and Berne, Switzerland. The massif contains some of high alpine mountains, although none is higher than 4,000 m. The massif can be described as the ridge south of the Grünhornlücke. The Wannenhorn Group borders the Aletschhorn Group in the west, the Finsteraarhorn Group in the east, the Fiescherhorn Group in the north and the small Eggishorn Group in the south.
The Wannenhorn ridge separates the Aletsch Glacier (in the west) from the Fiescher Glacier (in the east). Both glaciers are among the biggest of Europe with being the largest and third largest glacier of the European Alps respectively. These large glaciers make the Wannenhorn Group a relatively frequently visited massif. The massif is easier accessible than the Finsteraarhorn Group for example, but less accessible than the Jungfrau Group for example.
[edit] General mountaineering info
The Wannenhorn Group offers a number of mountaineering opportunities. Due to its altitude and limited number of mountain huts, some alpine routes are relatively long. A limited number of rock climbing routes are available in the southern part close to theBurg Hut. Due to the glacial environment, numerous skitouring opportunities exist in the winter and early spring.
Due to its high altitude and glacial environment, the Wannenhorn Group offers no extensive trail network or hiking opportunities. There are a limited number of trails near the Burg Hut. The Wannenhorn Group will almost certainly require travelling over sometimes dangerously crevassed glaciers. As a consequence, this region should only be visited by people with some level of mountaineering experience. A famous hiking tour crossing the main glaciers of the Bernese Alps visits the Wannenhorn Group by passing through the Grünhornlücke.
